The Garage, Campus Dr. The Garage, which serves as a matchmaker between NU-based startups and students interested in entrepreneurship, hosted its most recent networking event this Tuesday at Segal Visitors Center. The Garage has been holding these events every quarter since While most Garage events are held at its North campus location, it migrates once a year to recruit students studying humanities.

She said she also started receiving requests from students interested in entrepreneurship who had no ideas, but wanted to gain experience by joining an existing group. Each startup founder pitched their business ideas before they mingled with potential team members. Startups included Kago Kitchen, creator of superfood jerkies and City Health Tech, which develops wireless sink attachments to encourage handwashing in elementary schools.

Naomi Pieczulewski, a McCormick junior and member of MakerGirl, an educational nonprofit that teaches 3D-printing to young girls, said she came to the event to look for volunteers with experience in media and marketing. The nonprofit, which collaborates with schools and youth community partners in Chicago, plans to expand its outreach through its location in Evanston.

The startup is planning to host more off-campus STEM sessions to make events more accessible, Pieczulewski said. Wes Jiao, a McCormick sophomore, said he was already involved with programs at The Garage without working in an existing startup, but was compelled to attend the event as he knew many of the startup founders from traveling to San Francisco with The Garage. Indira Ramos — a graduate student studying communications and co-founder of Mentee, a web service connecting mentors to high schoolers during college applications — said the startup was in the process of developing an app.

To develop an app, she said, Mentee needs supporters as well as developers and students with experience in finance.

Growing a mid-market company can be very challenging. Ask any entrepreneur what keeps them up at night, and cash flow almost always makes the list. Growth sucks cash. So how can mid-market companies raise money and resources to expand? I s there a way though to raise capital for a business without the hassle and risks of VC money? There are five types of customer-funded models to raise capital without VC proven to exponentially grow the revenue for mid-market companies.

One of those customer-funded models which this article is going to explore in more detail is called the matchmaker model. Visionary entrepreneurs built matchmaker companies like Airbnb and Expedia. Many of these companies were built with virtually no investment to get started, because they had no need to buy what they were going to sell. Uber, TaskRabbit , and Freecycle are some other examples of successful organizations using the matchmaker model.

None of these companies own or touch any of the things that are being bought, sold, or exchanged. Yet they make a handsome profit through commission of fees, either from the buyer, seller, and sometimes both. The real estate industry is a classic example of a traditional business running on the matchmaker model.

Known for its personalised approach and emphasis on discretion and privacy, the Delhi-based matchmaking platform MatchMe has closed around matches so far. After playing cupid for a few of her friends and subsequently being approached by people outside her circle to find them a life partner, Mishi Mehta Sood realised matchmaking could become more than her passion project.

She realised that this had to be addressed in a more organised way. The idea further took roots as she joined forces with her college friend Tania Malhotra Sondhi. Together, the ladies hailing from a well-connected network in Delhi, combined their aptitude for matchmaking and extensive experience in HR recruiting and executive searches, to launch a personalised boutique matrimonial service called MatchMe in

The project is co-financed by the Governments of Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia through Visegrad Grants from International Visegrad.

We are firm believers in starting a business with someone else. Sure, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook went for it alone, but founders like him are few and far between. Plus, Zuckerberg had a ton of help. Remember that nasty lawsuit by those brawny Harvard students? Even if you think you can cover everything, why should you if you have a co-founder who can do it better?

Something else to consider? Different management styles. This is a lot easier and more fun!

Finding a co-founder is the most important thing for any startup because it usually is arguably the first hire, and that is what will determine whether your startup will be successful or not.

Of course, there are a few other things that will determine the success of your startup aside from having just a good co-founder. For instance, garnering media coverage by using tried, tested, and proven PR strategies can increase attention to your startup leading to more success. Additionally, reaching out to journalists and building strong relationships with them can also improve the level of publicity you get.

All these can be done by using a startup-based affordable PR firm like Pressfarm to help, instead of using expensive PR experts who promise nothing but thin air.
